PROJECT NAME: "Bicentennial Project"
Madisonville is observing its bicentennial with events scheduled throughout 2009. These include historical exhibits, history walks, installation of a commemorative marker, July 4th parade, picnic and fireworks, and a community holiday choral program late in the year. This grant will help cover costs for rental of inflatables at the July 4th event, school project awards and the holiday choral program.
PROJECT NAME: "Community Day Event & Filson Pool"
The Mt. Auburn Family Reunion, which takes place on the second Saturday in September each year, and is the largest and most well-attended event in Mt. Auburn (attracting hundreds of residents), and hence the most viable venue for connecting residents with both the Community Council and area businesses and organizations. $500 of this grant will provide entertainment for children at the event. The rest of the grant will be used to fund and additional 17 hours at Filson Pool.
PROJECT NAME: "Farmers Market"
After four years of operation, the Mt. Washington Farmers market has been forced to move to Stanbery Park, a location much less visible than the previous site. As a result, a significant advertising and promotion effort is necessary to alert customers to the new location and hours. This grant will provide large advertising banners to be hung in the business district and yard signs to be distributed throughout the neighborhood.
PROJECT NAME: "Farmers Market"
The Farmers Market was started in 2001 in the middle of the Northside business district in a parking lot a quickly grew to the point where it was necessary to move it to Hoffner Park. In 2008, approximately 200 attended every week, shopping from as many as 25 vendors. This grant will be used for advertising efforts, to help provide live music at the market, to underwrite creative educational activities for children two-three times per month and to partially pay the salary of the market co-ordinator. As a community-based project that truly supports all Northsiders that wish to shop at the Market, the Northside Community Council, the Northside Business Association, and the Northside Community Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation are equally co-sponsoring the paid position.
PROJECT NAME: "River Road Corridor"
This project is the continuation of a multi-year focus on the south side of River Road (US50). This city right-of-way runs the entire length of our community (approximately 8 miles) and is highly visible to the thousands of drivers that travel through Riverside on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the right-of-way is not maintained. In 2008, the neighborhood accrued over 500 volunteer hours in mowing the entire corridor and clearing brush and overgrowth in the 3500-3600 blocks. The goal for 2009 is to increase the mowing schedule and remove all brush along the entire corridor. Budget includes consumable supplies, equipment rental, specialty contracts and postage.
PROJECT NAME: "Second Saturday Concert Series"
Free concerts in our town square park were initiated in 2008 to overwhelming popularity. They are held the second Saturday, June thru September from 4-7 p.m. - encouraging Sayler park families to pack a picnic dinner and enjoy their meal while listening to music in the open air. Each concert (4) requires $500 for advertising and stage rental and a stipend for each musical act. We've found that such activities as this, our farmers market and the Harvest Festival help reduce criminal activity in the park.
PROJECT NAME: "Banner/Flags & Community Gardens"
Westwood is splitting this grant between two projects - a community garden and banner/flag fund raising project. In 2008, Westwood obtained a vacant lot at 2163 Harrison Ave. where an apartment building was demolished in 2007. Neighborhood volunteers attended training at the Civic Garden Center and won designation of this site as an official Community Garden. Funds will be used to prepare the site for planting. The second project will create colorful Westwood flags and banners that can be hung from front porches. Sale of the flags will help fund additional activities at the Community Garden.
Invest in Neighborhoods is grateful for support from WesBanco.
